The German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund was established in 1975.

It exists to help dogs and bitches of this breed that are in need of re-homing and since its inception has re-homed in excess of 6100 Shepherds.

It is a small Charity and most of the Trustees and Committee live in the South but German Shepherds in need from all over the country are taken in and given the chance of a new life.  The Fund does not have its own kennels and the Shepherds are placed in commercial kennels until there is a home available. The Welfare uses kennels in Surrey, Kent, Lincs, South Wales, Lancashire, and Essex. No kennel is allowed to take in more than 6 of Welfare’s dogs at any one time, except in the direst emergency.

No dog is put down unless on the advice of a Veterinary surgeon or unless its temperament makes it unfit to be re-homed. Members of the committee or the fund check all homes before a Shepherd is placed in them. This is done on a voluntary basis and although many miles are travelled no-one makes a charge for petrol.

Kennel and Veterinary bills are horrendous and are constantly rising. Welfare continues to pay the Veterinary bills of any of their dogs that has an existing medical condition when it is rehomed. Money is raised by Legacies, Membership fees, the “dog-shop”, boot sales, flag days, donations etc.

No Welfare Shepherd is allowed to be bred from and the Fund pays half of the costs of spaying bitches and castrating dogs that have been relinquished to them. The money for this is raised almost entirely by car-boot sales.
